Nursery Expectations

Nursery Information for Parents

These are some of the things your children will be expected to do:

 Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Settle into the nursery routine being able to leave his/her carer happily.                                                          

• Put coat on.

• Help to tidy away own equipment.

• Become familiar with nursery routine, nursery rules, staff and children.

• Join in and try new activities.

• Go to the toilet, flush then wash & dry hands.

• Share with others

Physical Development

• Kick a large ball

• Catch a large ball

• Climb confidently and balance

• Move in lots of different ways i.e. walk, run, jump, hop, roll, crawl etc

• Turn pages in a book, carefully

• Begin to hold a pencil using 2 fingers and a thumb

• Draws circles and lines

• Use scissors to snip

Mathematics

• Recognise and name colours.

• Match and sort pictures and objects

• Count up to 10 and beyond

• Count a small number of objects.

• Sing number rhymes.

• Fill containers full /empty.

• Use language such as big, little, small, on, under, next to etc

• Use size language such as big, medium / middle-sized, small, long, short, heavy.

Expressive Arts and Design

• Sing nursery rhymes

• Explore musical instruments (bang & shake)

• Dance and move to favourite music

• Build with construction materials i.e lego, bricks

• Make up stories using figures and toys

• Enjoy playing mums and dads, superheroes etc

• Explore different techniques using paint i.e. printing, finger painting, string pictures etc.

• Use paste and glue.

Understanding of the World

• Talk about family, friends and special events e.g. birthdays, holidays

• Show an interest in plants and animals.

.      Notice signs of the changing seasons.

• Explore mechanical toys and technology e.g. cameras, phones, tablets, computers, wind up toys, remote control toys, push/pull cars etc

Literacy

• Sing lots of songs and rhymes from beginning to the end

• Listen to lots of stories and talk about the pictures

• Begin to make marks, lines and circles saying ‘that’s my name’ or writing a shopping list

Communication and Language

• Talk to adults and other children

• Talk about what they have been doing

• Use who, what and where when talking

• Follow simple instructions.

• Understand who, what and where in questions

• Listen to other people speaking, taking turns in conversation

• Listen to stories, songs and rhymes
